Palo Alto Montessori Programs

Toddler Program

Ages: 18 months-36 months

Odyssey’s main objective is to provide a prepared environment in which we look at the whole child. In our toddler program, ages 18 months to 36 months, we strive to create a space where your child will learn the following skills—social/emotional regulation, language, gross/fine motor refinement, pre reading/writing tools, mathematics, cultural diversity, geography, sensorial experiences, and practical life dexterities. You will see all of these skills practiced in the main areas of our environment-Practical Life, Language, Math, Geography/Cultural, and Sensorial.

Playing, working, and socializing with peers and teachers allow for opportunities throughout the day to develop their language proficiency, both receptive and expressive, as well as the emotional and social awareness necessary for self-regulation of the will.

The smaller teacher to student ratios provided for the toddler classes (maximum 1 to 6) allow for close supervision and positive role modeling as they begin the transition from parallel play to more interactive play.

Preschool Program

Ages 2.5 years-6 years

Odyssey aims to foster children’s individual needs within the areas of the environment-Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Geography/Cultural. Within our primary program, Odyssey creates a foundation and continues to build upon that foundation throughout the whole year. Our primary program runs through the kindergarten year.

Montessori classrooms are known as “prepared environments”, and a great deal of thought goes into making them feel like the “Casa Dei Bambini”, or Children’s House, that Montessori named her first school. It should be a child’s home away from home, and be as attractive and comfortable as possible. It is an environment created to reinforce the children’s independence and intellectual development, and to stimulate discussion and collaborative learning. Within the classroom, the curriculum areas reflect not only the interest area for which each is named, but also their connections to all the other areas, supporting and expanding their knowledge of the world.

TK/Kindergarten Afternoon Class- English or Mandarin options

Odyssey offers an afternoon class for both the English and Mandarin program. Children ages 4/5, who may currently attend a morning program, are welcome to join Odyssey for an afternoon in English or in Mandarin using the Montessori philosophy. Children will gain independence, confidence, and language skills while socializing with their peers. Children will focus on either the English or Mandarin language by developing their fine motor skills for practicing their letters or characters, using phonetics to begin forming words, and recognizing words through word association. Odyssey uses simplified Mandarin used in Mainland China.
